Organize Your Grocery Shopping – Week 4 Organizing Tip
I don’t know about you, but grocery shopping is one of my least favorite chores. Even now, when all my children are grown and I no longer have to push one full cart while pulling another one behind me, a trip to the grocery store is just not something I enjoy. However, organizing your grocery shopping will help. Here are a few things I have found that make it easier for me.
One of the most frustrating things about grocery shopping is having to make a trip back to the store because you forgot something, so get organized by keeping a running list. Post a piece of paper somewhere convenient and label it, you guessed it, “Grocery List“. As soon as the last of something is used, or when you notice it will need to be replaced soon, add it to your list. Get the whole family in the habit of adding things they finish the last of to the list, too.
Before you head out to the grocery store with your list, go over it and organize it into categories – vegetables, dairy, canned goods, snacks, bread, etc. By now, I’m sure you know on which aisle you will find each item on your list so further organize by aisle.
If you buy certain items from different stores, separate those out under the name of the store. A little extra time and effort now will make your shopping faster and you are less likely to forget something.
Lastly, search your coupon organizer and attach coupons to the list for the store where you’ll be shopping for that item. Place everything into an envelope or folder and you’re ready to go.
If your grocery shopping involves several stops, try to get them all done in one trip. It can be tiring, but procrastinating will not get it done and you will have to fit it into your schedule another day. Just like you mapped out the order of the grocery aisles, map out the order of the stops you’re going to make before you leave home so you can avoid backtracking, and you’ll save time and money on gasoline.
If your are going to be out for most of the day, keep a cooler in your trunk or somewhere out of the way to keep your perishables cool. When you’re buying meat or fish, ask for a couple of scoops of ice in a plastic bag and place it in the cooler as well. This will help you avoid leaky messes from drippy ice cream, meat, or fish and your frozen items won’t melt. The cooler is a good place to store your canvas shopping bags so you’ll have them next time.
Lastly, now is a good time to give your older children some responsibility by getting them involved. Give each one their own list and send them off. Make sure they know to not add anything that is not on their list to the basket. If at all possible, leave anyone who is not old enough to help at home.
