Organize Your Garage

Seven Tips to Garage Organization

Keeping a garage organized can be an ongoing project.  Many times people store so many things in their garage the car never makes it inside.  There are many things you can use to reclaim your garage.  Here are seven ideas to get you started and help keep your garage organized.

1.  Garage Shelves – Attaching shelves to the walls of the garage can increase your storage space.  If you prefer not to attach them to the walls, you can use stand-alone shelving units that are perfect in the garage.  Shelves are are available in heavy-duty plastic, metal, or particle board and can hold heavier items that are often found in the garage, such as tools and sports equipment.

2.  Overhead Storage – Overhead storage is a great way to get things put away that you don’t use very often such as suitcases or holiday decorations.  If you don’t want to install permanent shelves, you can find hanging shelf units that attach to the rafters and provide an instant storage area.

3.  Slatwall and Pegboard – Slatwall or pegboard are perfect options in the garage. You can attach assorted size hooks, baskets, and shelves to store of a variety of items of all sizes.   You can add a variety of attachments to hold tools, garden and sports equipment, mops and brooms and much more.

4.  Tool hangers – There are a variety of hanging systems to hold tools.  You can use roller versions that grab the handles and hold them in place or use standard hooks that will hold the tool, with the handles hanging down.  These will keep the tools out of the way, making things not only neater, but safer as well.

5.  Store-Pod – Store-pods are a great addition to your garage storage system.  They are waterproof, heavy-duty plastic storage units that are attached to the beams above.  They look like a large plastic bag with shelves inside.  The front is a clear plastic door that zips closed.  They have ventilation slots that help reduce dust and mildew, while still keeping pests out of the things being stored.

6.  Sports storage – If you have a family involved with sports, there are always balls lying around, as well as shoes and other gear.  Instead of tripping on them, the garage is a great place to store them.  Look for specially designed holders for sports equipment.  You will find bike racks, racks to hold baseball bats and balls, and more.  Bike racks can be mounted high on the wall or ceiling freeing up more space below.

7.  Cabinets – Cabinets with a work surface are perfect for the garage.  You can add drawers with dividers to help you organize small tools, nails, screws, etc.  The work surface serves as a place for projects that are too messy or noisy to do in the house.  You can add locks to the cabinet doors or drawers to not only to protect your tools, but to also keep small children safe.

These are just a few of the possibilities available to help you organize your garage.  Once you start looking, I’m sure you will find even more.
