Whether all the rooms in your home are small, or you have one small room in your house, it can be difficult to organize and use the space. However, with a little thought and preparation, the room or rooms can be an organized and functional.
To get in the right frame of mind make a plan starting with a list of all the positive aspects of the room. For example, it has a closet, built-in cabinets or bookshelves; it is bright and sunny; it has useable wall space; it has good lighting. Don’t think about the negatives. It’s important to get in a positive frame of mind.
Once your list is complete, the next step in your plan is to decide what you want to do with the room. Will it be a bedroom, home office, sewing room, playroom, or maybe even a cozy room to sit and read. Once you know know how the room will be used, you will be ready to begin organizing.
The first step in getting organized is taking an inventory of all the items already in the room. Keep only the items that fit the purpose of the room. Once you have removed the items that don’t belong, sort what is left into four groups – keep, donate, toss, and repair – then do it.
Now that you know how the room will be used and you have only the items that belong, it’s time to think about what you need to organize it all and start making another list. Here’s one to get you started:
1. Shelves: Shelves are a great way to get things up off the floor and organized, and they can be installed in a closet or along a wall.
2. Bins/Clear Plastic Containers/Baskets: Containers used to compartmentalize and organize like items and are a great organizing tool. It may be cheaper to use shoe boxes and old packing boxes for storage, however, it will begin to look like a warehouse instead of a room you want to spend time in. Instead, keep your room cheerful and neat looking by investing in colorful bins in varying sizes, stackable clear plastic containers, and pretty baskets. Make sure you clearly label the front of each so you can easily find what you want when you need it.
3. Over-the-Door Racks and Bags: There are all kinds of storage racks and bags made to easily hang over-the-door that can be used. Look for shoe or towel racks, bags for storing jewelry, narrow wire racks, etc. Then think outside the box and use them in creative ways.
4. Slatwall and Pegboard with Hooks: Popular in garages, slatwall and pegboard with various size hooks can be pretty and functional in other rooms as well. Use them to hang pretty scarves, jewelry, purses, ties, or belts in a bedroom, closet, or bathroom. Use them for dishtowels, cooking utensils, or pots and pans in the kitchen.
5. Drawers: Drawers are a great way to compartmentalize items and keep them out of site. To keep drawers from becoming junky and jumbled, use the appropriate depth drawer for the items you are storing and use dividers to help with organizing. In the bedroom, deeper drawers are better for bulky items like sweaters or robes. If you store thin t-shirts in a deep drawer, it’s difficult to get the ones on the bottom out and easy to forget that you even have them.
