The holidays are over and it’s a good time to get control of all the new toys and games before the clutter takes over and parts are lost. As with any organizing project, the first step is to sort, mend, donate, and throw away.
Make it at least a yearly project to mend or throw away toys or games that are broken or have missing parts and give away or donate toys your children no longer play with or have outgrown. Be sure you involve them as much as possible. This is a good way to teach them about organization and giving to others.
Now that you have sorted through everything and know what you’re keeping, what do you do with it, especially if the only place to store toys is in the child’s bedroom or in the family room. Designate one area for toy storage and use baskets and bins of varying sizes.
If the child can read, label each storage basket or bin to make finding the toy they want to play with and putting it away at the end of the day quick and easy. If the child can’t read, use a picture.
For example, if the basket is for dolls – use a picture of a doll, a picture of a truck for trucks, etc. You may want to break these down into smaller baskets if there are particular dolls or trucks they collect and play with more such as Barbie Dolls, etc…
At the end of the day, make a game of clean up by setting a timer and giving a small prize if the child can put all their toys where they belong before the timer goes off. Prizes can be as simple as an extra bedtime story.
For big prizes, determine how may days of clean up it will take to earn the prize. Put up a calendar and write the name of the prize on the day it will be given with a red marker (movies, zoo, sleepover…). Use colored stars to show whether clean up was done.
Finally, make it a habit that for every new toy bought, one old toy has to be thrown away if broken or put into a donation box. Keep the box out of site so they won’t be tempted to pull toys out. When it’s full, drop it off at your favorite donation center.
This will take time, consistence, and patience on your part, but in end, the result will be less chaos, your children will learn to take care of their toys, to earn they things they want, and the importance of sharing with others.
Be sure to share you toy organizing tips by leaving a comment.
